Match Results

As promised, the match results are in. I think I did fairly well considering this was my first time, and I had no basis for comparison.

My total match score was 109.92 based on a total raw time of 107.42 and a total of 5 points down (meaning I hit the -1 section of a target five different times over the course of the match resulting in a half second penalty for each point down) for a 2.5 second penalty. Considering that there were 24 total targets among the four stages and I only missed the prime target area five times, I think that's pretty darn good for a newbie.

My times were good enough for 32nd out of 40 shooters overall. I was 4th of 6 in the CDP (custom defensive pistol) division; however, I was the top unclassified shooter in my division. The other two UCs in CDP came in with scores of 132.21 and 148.35. I missed third place in the division by enough that it wasn't close (91.56 from a marksman ranked shooter). As I suspected, ESE#1 was the top shooter in CDP and second place overall with a score of 56.34. He's classified as expert. So, he should be shooting better than me.

Top score overall was turned in by a stock service pistol shooter at 53.42. So, if I can cut my time in half, I've to a chance at winning.

Maybe next time...yeah, right.

  1. So. much. fun.

I'm actually missing shooting right now because of your posts. I shouldn't be reading about it while at work. Our next match isn't until Feb 4th for defensive pistol; I'll have to check the date for the steel challenge because I'm really, really needing some gunpowder therapy.

    1. There are several matches scheduled in the area over the next few weeks, but I think it will be at least two weeks before my schedule will allow a follow up performance.

    1. SciFiChick, refer back to the previous post about shooting in the pistol match on Sunday. If you're not familiar with IDPA competition, it probably does sound like Greek. If you're still lost, let me know and I will give you some links to follow for a better explanation than I can give.

  3. I'm of mixed feelings about the USPSA/IDPA shooting, as fun and sport it's fine. But I worry about the "gaming" aspect of it on people who use just that for defensive handgun training.

Not saying that it's useless for training, but the specialized guns, holsters and mindset......there's got to be some happy middle that I'm missing.

    1. Odysseus, I agree. I think if you use your regular carry rig, it has some real world application. Especially the draw from concealment, getting fast/good hits, etc. the gamesmanship, down loading ammo, etc. is a bit much and something I don't foresee engaging in myself. Training is training. Competition is competition. While there is some overlap, they are not the same and should never be so confused.

    2. I have the same mixed feelings Odysseus and Shepherd K. But...it is good practice if you can keep yourself from gaming it. I try to always keep a tactical mindset and will take the procedural penalties if they don't make tactical sense. My friend, Mez, and I are two of the only shooters at our matches who can actually use concealment properly and who don't step our entire body out while slicing the pie. I concentrate less on my time and more on shooting correctly. I'll never shoot as fast as the guys with race guns and rigs. I have made put on a mag well and use extended mags, but that just makes good sense. With a mag well, you can still load up when your fine motor coordination goes out the window. And extended mags? Well, what's to argue about that? Ten rounds instead of eight. Yes, please.

But it's still loads of fun, no matter how you look at it.

    3. Wow. That's some good grammar up there "...I have made put..."

      Sorry.

    4. GunDiva, I know what you mean. I saw a lot of "shoot me first" vests, and several that technically were against the rules. I was wearing my normal windbreaker, and I was really surprised at 1) how well it concealed a full size 1911, and 2) how little trouble I had drawing from concealment with it.

As one of your editors, I will make no further comment on your grammar.

    5. Gun Diva- extended magazine makes sense, to me, for a spare carry mag. I'd be tempted to start with the 8 and reload with the 10 round ones.

  4. A spare carry mag? Puh-leeze. When I carry, it's one in the pipe, ten in the mag and two spare mags. :) Good thing about being a girl - not many people expect to see one carrying, so they don't. Their little brains fill in other "reasons" for the weird drapes of some clothes. A cop, though? They'd see me printing from a mile away.
