I'd Be Pissed Too...

So, a few nights ago, The Queen and I went out for a lovely evening stroll as we are want to do from time to time. Theoretically, the intent of the walk was to get some exercise and enjoy the evening. We wound up strolling to a little hole in the wall tiki bar that opened up near the house tucked away in an industrial area where you'd never guess there was a bar much less a tiki bar.

We perused the drink menu of island themed alcoholic mixed drinks and made our choices. The Queen ordered something called the Headhunter which was advertised as " Dark rum, cinnamon and banana liqueurs, blended until frozen.

The drink arrived at our table decked out thusly:

Now, I'm not one to be impressed by presentation, but this got my attention. I love the look on the poor buggers face. I'd be pissed too if I had to wear a dolphin hat made out of a banana.

The Queen reported that the drink did not measure up to her expectations passing the palette with very little in the way of flavor. Disappointing. We agreed that we would stick to rum and coke there in the future.

  1. HH reports that Kraken rum, tastes way too much like straight brown sugar to be safe at 94 proof. :)

    2. Release the Kraken in moderation, one of her students lost a weekend plus two days based off of her recommendation.

  2. I’m all about moderation. We bought a small airline sized bottle of it to try Saturday night along with a bottle Curzan Aged white rum and some Makers Mark for me. The Kraken was very tasty, and I can see how it could lead one astray.

  3. I was never much of a drinker, but I always hated rum and coke. But I loved rum and squirt. It just seems like a better match, with the citrus of the squirt working better with the warmth and body of the rum.

As to my other go to distilled beverage, I generally like bourbon, either straight or with one or two cubes of ice.

As I said, I have never been much of a drinker, but will have the occasional dark beer. I have a familial history of those who have problems with alcohol, and so I tend to be overly cautious about drinking. I have not had a beer or any other alcohol this summer. But the next few 90 degree days here in MI might cause me to pick up a couple of dark beers.

    1. My wife speaks highly of Buffalo Trace Bourbon if you can find it.

  4. Pigpen, I too am a light drinker with a preference for a good bourbon or a really good beer (Hefeweizen by choice). I used to hate rum until I realized it was cheap well rum that tastes like jet fuel that I hate. Coconut rum is pretty darn good as is spiced dark rum. It will never take the place of bourbon, but it’s a good second choice drink.

Odysseus, I speak highly of it too. The liquor stores around me do stock it though I stick to Makers Mark for most of my day to day drinking.

  5. I live in Michigan, and we are going through a huge increase in the number of craft beer brewers starting up. While their product is very much on the more expensive side, since I drink so little, I don't mind paying more for something that doesn't taste like tap water, which I find most of the American lagers do. If I am really adventurous, there are importers of beer from many other countries as well.
But thanks for the tips. As I said, I drink so little that I would rather pay for something good than try and save by buying cheap and then getting regret, just like with cheap tools.
